STONE RETAINING WALLS
A versatile feature of any landscape
Stone retaining walls can be used to create different outdoor living spaces or highlight focal points in your front or backyard. Retaining walls made of natural stone can also help protect your property by preventing erosion and supporting your overall landscape.
Create a different look to your yard with an outcropping retaining wall. An outcropping retaining wall is a nice aesthetic and functional solution to small and large changes in grade. An outcropping retaining wall can also provide an opportunity to create pockets for perennials and annuals to be intertwined into the wall. This type of retaining wall provides visual interest to the eye while also creating a very functional wall.
Consider using a mixture of natural stones to create a unique design with contrasting colors and textures that will stand out in your outdoor space.
Below are some examples of various types of retaining walls we have installed for our clients.
Shown on the left is a Bluestone Wall providing both a privacy screen and an enclosure for this garden walkway. The client also wanted to include a water feature within the wall so we added a small water fountain. Both the wall and the water fountain are made with Bluestone which are great for Chicago weather as it’s very durable and withstands the rough weather conditions of the Chicagoland area.
This is a Granite Cobble Retaining Wall with a flagstone coping. The wall above provides both grade retention and definition of the patio space. The wall helps create an intimate space for leisure enjoyment of this outdoor living and firepit environment. This is a great example of the functionality and beauty a Retaining Wall can add to any garden or outdoor living space.
This brick retaining wall is another example of combined functionality. It is providing retainment for the walk above, as well as providing a beautiful backdrop for the patio below it. The limestone coping is another architectural design element and matches the columns on the home (shown in the background).
Retaining Walls are extremely important for this home along Winnetka’s Lake Michigan shore. Because the home’s backyard is on a steep slope the Retaining Wall and the Outcropping Stone Wall ensure the yard won’t experience erosion.
This Outcropping Stone creates a more natural looking Retaining Wall. To the left of the Retaining Wall is an integrated Flagstone Staircase. The staircase is made of the same stone as the Outcropping Retaining Wall and provides accessibility from the upper level to the lower level of this home’s yard. This is a beautiful illustration of how a retaining wall does not have to be flat, and we can design a more natural looking wall into the grade of your landscape.
This BlueStone Retaining Wall is another great illustration of a low Retaining Wall being used to help define the edge of the outdoor living space and creating a garden space above for plantings.
