Classical Refinement in Highland Park

The homeowners’ objectives about the redevelopment of the outdoor spaces were clear, but they were also open to a wide range of ideas that would help create a more classic and refined outdoor living space.

Our solution was to create three distinct areas to enhance the outdoor living space with the surrounding gardens: a barbeque area, a formal dining terrace, and a lower garden terrace.

On the upper level, the team designed and installed a masonry barbeque made of cut bluestone accented with a cantilevered 3” thick Black Cambrian granite countertop.  The barbeque was situated in proximity to the kitchen, on an angle, allowing the homeowners to view the terraces and gardens below while cooking.

A sunken fountain, clad in bluestone, showcasing the homeowners’ antique lead statue was re-aligned with the formal living room windows, adjacent to the formal dining terrace, to provide guests a view from the house to the garden. Bluestone steps wrap around the fountain to transition to the garden terrace below.

The surrounding gardens are formally arranged with the use of manicured boxwood hedges and a variety of ground covers including ginger, ferns, impatiens, white shrub roses, and pachysandra providing a colorful background to display the homeowners’ antique Statues of the Seasons.
