Vernon Hills, IL—

James Martin Associates (JMA) awarded six scholarships to the children of current Associates, including local Vernon Hills High School graduate Jake McElroy.

Jake recently earned his Certified Flight Instructor License which allows him to teach students how to fly different kinds of airplanes. He is now a full-time instructor at Skill Aviation at Waukegan Airport.

In the coming years, there is expected to be a major deficit of pilots. According to the Chicago Tribune:

Major U.S. airlines are hiring pilots at a rate not seen since before 9/11, and that is encouraging more young people to consider a career in the cockpit.

Hiring is likely to remain brisk for years. Smaller airlines in the U.S. are struggling with a shortage that will continue as they lose pilots to the bigger carriers, which in turn will need to replace thousands of retiring pilots over the next few years.

Jake was born and raised in Vernon Hills. He attended the College of Lake County and obtained an associate’s degree in Arts. He is continuing his education at Colombia College of Missouri studying psychology and is expected to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in April of 2019.

Jake’s father, Larry McElroy, is a retired airline pilot who flew for 33 years with American Airlines. Growing up, they would travel around the world together every summer, and over the years visited 89 countries on six continents. In 2015, Jake decided he would follow in his father’s footsteps and pursue a career as a commercial airline pilot.

Jake first earned his Private Pilot’s License in 2016 and has since acquired his Instrument and Multi-Engine ratings, his Commercial Pilot’s License, his Ground Instructor’s License and finally, his Certified Flight Instructor’s License.

“Having a dad that has flown for 33 years, aviation has always been in my blood. Luckily, I chose a career path that combines my two passions, travel and aviation,” Jake McElroy said.

Jake was awarded the Shari Dalziel Scholarship at James Martin Associates’ 40th anniversary celebration dinner. His mother, Beth McElroy, has worked at the company for 20 years.

“I’ve known Jake his entire life, and I was especially glad that James Martin Associates was able to contribute to his ongoing education,” said Jim Martin, President of James Martin Associates. “I look forward to him being the pilot on one of my future trips.”

Vernon Hills, IL—

At their 11th annual Partner Appreciation event, James Martin Associates (JMA) continued their tradition of giving by raising money for charity.

JMA’s 2018 efforts—along with a generous donation by Russo Power Equipment—raised over $4,700, making the total raised at annual Partner Appreciation events nearly $42,000 to date. The donations were given by JMA’s partner vendors who attended the party, including SavATree, JM Irrigation, Elite Growers, Mariani Nursery, Night Light, Central Turf and Irrigation Supply, and Naturescape Design.

In addition to its charitable function, the party is held each year to celebrate JMA’s partnerships with landscape industry suppliers and subcontractors. “Whether it’s plant purchasing, irrigation installation, or tree pruning, we recognize that we’re all part of the same ecosystem and that we work best when we work together,” said Jim Martin, President of James Martin Associates.

This year’s theme was college football tailgating. Part of the event included a celebrated face painter who painted party attendees’ faces with colors and logos from their alma maters.

JMA employees also created a football field goal post, and attendees competed for a prize by kicking field goals.

University of Illinois alumni were recognized for having the most fans at the party.

The grand prize was awarded through a raffle drawing. Roger Fick of Wilson Nursery had his name drawn for the grand prize, which allowed him to select the charity that the money would be donated to. He chose the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit that serves veterans who have sustained a mental or physical injury, illness, or wound after September 11th.

“I picked the Wounded Warrior Project because it’s a small way of showing thanks to all of our veterans and their families,” said Fick. “I’m grateful to James Martin Associates and its partners who raised money to help these families.”

This was the second time in ten years that Fick has won the grand prize. His first charity selection was the American Cancer Society.

“Each year we always look forward to celebrating our partners while also raising much needed funds for important Chicagoland and national nonprofits,” said Martin. “It’s great to be able to bring together our industry’s community and give back at the same time.”

Vernon Hills, IL—

In recent years, villages in the Chicagoland area like Winnetka, Libertyville, Lincolnshire, Park Ridge, and Lake Forest have developed stricter codes to control flooding throughout their communities.

These codes are aimed at controlling water that enters into the community’s storm water system. The systems can become backed up and cause flooding in basements, on roads, or in backyards. As a consequence, most villages are trying to reduce or control the amount of impermeable surface on a property.

Impermeable areas such as a house, driveway, walkway, or patio cannot absorb water like natural, permeable elements can. Permeable areas include grass, planting and mulch beds, and some specially designed patios that allow water to pass through into the sub-grade. Therefore, homeowners, architects, and landscaping companies must contend with these codes while building new homes or landscapes.

The landscape architects and designers at James Martin Associates (JMA) have gained expertise and knowledge of each individual village’s codes over the past 40 years and incorporate these codes into their designs and installation work.

“We work with communities to prepare a permeable surface calculation, secure the permit, and follow plans approved by a civil engineer,” said Jim Gorsline, Residential Design Build Operations Director at James Martin Associates.

Solutions for managing water can be as simple as directing a property’s runoff to a rain garden located on the property where water can be used for plantings that thrive in wet areas.

For more complicated projects located in or near flood plains, storm water detention areas and compensatory storage are often constructed to keep water on the property until the city’s storm water system can gradually accept the water.

Vernon Hills, Ill.—

Every time the landscape crews of James Martin Associates travel to a property, they consider the waste they’re creating.

ZH_Grinder_022

“Instead of branches, grass, sod, small logs, and other yard waste going to the landfill, we recycle as much of it as possible,” said Jim Martin, President.

This sustainability-focused practice was implemented in 2003 when the company sought to integrate lean management practices with green initiatives. These green initiatives include recycling yard waste.

ZH_Grinder_001

When the yard waste materials generated from project sites come into the JMA facility, the materials are separated, mechanically ground, screened, and turned into an organic mulch.

“We process and grind 3,000-4,000 yards of waste annually, which creates over 1,500 yards of rich, organic mulch,” said John Weiler, Yard and Material Purchasing Manager.

ZH_Grinder_026

This mulch is used as a soil amendment in new landscape plantings and as a mulch for site shrub and flower beds. Use of this rich organic mulch helps prevent weed growth, retain moisture, and add curb appeal to the landscape. Since it is recycled, it has a net reduced carbon impact when compared to shredded hardwood bark.

JMA also recycles old concrete and stone scraps from project removals and demolitions. Instead of sending these materials to a landfill, JMA crushes these materials into a small size similar to gravel which is then used for sub-bases under patios, driveways and other landscape hardscapes.

Finally, metal scraps, wooden pallets, and plastic materials are taken to the recycling plant where they are broken down to be reused.

Since 2004, James Martin Associates estimates a reduction of 30,000 cubic yards of landscape waste being hauled to landfills, resulting in a decrease of fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions of 213,400 pounds.

“It’s a win-win for our bottom line and for the environment,” said Martin.
